  • PP producers need to innovate to grow

Polypropylene producers will need to be innovative and customer driven if they are to grow over the next five years given slow economic growth and fierce inter-polymer competition. This is one of the conclusions from AMI's recently completed study on the market for polypropylene.

Packaging applications will account for the largest volume of growth despite weak consumer spending and competitive pressures.  While PP is losing share in caps and closures, transit packaging and thin walled packaging, it is gaining sales through the development of new grades of resin offering high clarity and fast cycling and via the ingenuity of processors developing solutions with high levels of consumer appeal such as in mould labelling. Automotive will see some of the fastest growth driven by PP producers, compounders and processors coming together to offer automotive companies solutions which substantially reduce their costs.

These and many more examples of how the polypropylene market is evolving, backed up by AMI's usual detailed statistical analysis is now available in AMI's report on Polypropylene Markets in Europe. To find out more contact Jon Nash: jsn@amiplastics.com

  • Market changes drive plastic label growth

AMI Consulting, has just published a new report highlighting the dynamic structural changes that have been occurring in the European label industry in recent years. Despite the economic hardships of recent years, plastic label demand grew on average by 6% per year 2008-2011. While the end-use applications are relatively mature in Europe, plastic labels converters are taking market share from paper at an increasing rate. Plastic glue applied labels illustrated the paper to plastic transition best, through the wrap around labels in the beverage industry, which resulted in 400 million square meters additional demand in the past three years. Plastic dominates the in-mould labels segment as well and is increasing its penetration in self-adhesive label applications as well. • Outlook for polymers in photovoltaic installations analysed

Driven by government subsidy the photovoltaic industry has grown rapidly in recent years which has led to spectacular growth in the use of polymer materials for photovoltaic modules. However, this has also led to considerable overcapacity in production and with the market now slowing in the face of reduced government subsidies and slower global economic growth, the outlook is more challenging. Even so this niche area for polymer materials is still expected to see growth in double digits over the next five years. AMI Consulting has just completed the first study of its kind looking at the prospects for polymer materials in photovoltaic cell manufacturing globally.  For further information contact Andrew Reynolds: apr@amiplastics.com

  • European injection moulding industry analysed

Every two to three years AMI's consultants carry out a review of the status of the injection moulding industry in Europe. Making full use of AMI's extensive database of over 10,000 injection moulders across Europe, together with the consultancy's unique understanding of the end use demand for polymers in injection moulding,  this research aims to provide detailed strategic understanding on the size, structure and future prospects for this sector of the plastics processing industry. Further information is available from Sylvia Tabero sat@amiplastics.com

  • New research into retort packaging

AMI Consulting has just started a research programme into the market for retortable packaging in Europe. The study will be a detailed review of demand and supply trends within this segment with a special analysis of the market opportunity for plastic packaging converters arising from the growing transition of traditional packaging formats such as glass and metal into added value retort plastic packaging. Companies interested in signing up early to the research will benefit from a substantial discount. The report is expected to be out early 2013. • Detailing 14 million tonnes of PE use in Europe

More than 14 million tonnes of polyethylene materials were used in Europe last year and AMI has just launched an update of its polyethylene markets service in which it details demand by nearly 50 different categories and according to 11 different grades of material. "The service aims to help suppliers of polyethylene understand recent changes in the markets in terms of demand growth, grade selection, supply options and new product development for a vast range of end use applications," explains AMI's Research Director, Andrew Reynolds. He goes on, "Having come through the recession the industry now faces the challenge of achieving growth in an economy increasingly in danger of long term stagnation.  AMI's analysis of the European polyethylene market will help suppliers better understand how the market is changing so they can be sure of profiting  from opportunities as they arise."

AMI researchers are now investigating these markets and the new service will be available early in 2013. Substantial discounts are available to early-bird subscribers. For further information contact Andrew Reynolds apr@amiplastics.com at AMI.
