Converted flexible packaging for confectionery in Europe

Converted flexible packaging for confectionery in Europe

Published: June 2012

The confectionery market is one of the most valuable and largest segments in the flexible packaging market in Europe. It is also one of the most dynamic with a wide variety of substrates used in a wide and ever changing number of formats.  Despite the recent difficult economic climate the market has continued to grow and for 2011 more than 235,000 tonnes of raw material or 5 billion m² of materials were used in the sector, while the value of the industry is in excess of EUR 1.2 billion.  Furthermore, the market is forecast to continue to grow at 6.0% per year in square metre volume terms. All of this development is driven by the consumer view that confectionery continues to be an affordable luxury.

However, the dynamics of the industry are changing.  The market is becoming increasingly competitive and producers of converted flexible packaging have had to cope with rises in raw material and energy costs.  Significantly the large confectionery producing companies have been realigning their businesses via acquisition or by investments in the growing markets in Central and Eastern Europe as well as Turkey. As a result flexible packaging converters have also had to reconsider their strategies and push their manufacturing footprint eastwards.

For those reasons AMI Consulting have just completed a comprehensive review of packaging usage in the sector which proves to be an invaluable tool for all companies who participate, or wish to participate in the confectionery segment.

The report provides an invaluable source of information for any company currently producing converted flexible packaging or serving the converter industry and for those companies considering market entry.
